The demand to reuse fabric is gaining worldwide attention. In the past, approximately 40% of all the cotton grown is lost due to harvest and manufacture of textiles because its wastes go directly into landfills; but technology has now made it possible to recover and recycle these lost new yarns from commercial fabric trimmings, off cuts and weaving. There is now a new way of helping save Mother Earth and this is done through fabric recycling.
The idea of recycling is not a modern idea. Our ancestors have long practiced this eco-friendly principle in their daily activities but the massive campaign of recycling began when the world realized its crimes against nature and suffered natural calamities and disasters. Environmental Science revealed how severely damaged our ozone layer is and how extreme the waste disposal problem is. Soon, environmental laws and regulations were passed and international conventions where initiation to help safeguard the earth from possible destruction. The Green Campaign was launched and manufacturers found ways of adhering to the demands of the eco-friendly products.
Every year, an estimate of 2.5 billion dollars is saved by green clothing manufacturers since they managed to lessen their amount of textile wastes each year. These manufacturers have managed to transform “waste” fabric into high quality household drapes that are now enjoyed by many families all over the world. You can easily identify these drapes on the tags they have. Most often than not, it contains seals which certifies that it is eco-friendly and recycled organic fabric.
You may also do your own fabric recycling at home. Aside from patronizing these recycled fabrics you can also do the American Tradition of Patchwork Quilt. Go through your piles of unused clothes and choose the color and design which will more likely match your quilt. Take time to practice your weaving skills and consider it a perfect gift during the holiday season.
There are many ways in which you can contribute in helping save Mother Earth. Become an environmental hero even in the littlest efforts you may think of. Teach your kids to value the principle of reuse, recycle and reduce. Furthermore, choose recycled and eco-friendly fabric further help save the only home we have – Mother Earth.
